Received 22nd, 1 .25 a.m. One of the crew of the barquentine Hector (from Port Sarding, New Hebrides) who had been detained ashore for misbehaviour, plunged into the sea to swim oft as the vessel wae sailing, find was fired at from shore but without effect. Those on 6oard the vessel returned the fire, but no casualties were reported. It is not known whether the firing party ashore were whites or natives. A heavy thunderstorm past-el over the city to-day. Wimble's warehouse and the National Bank were both struck by lightning, and the flag poles on the top of the latter building were shattered but no serious damage was done, During the storm an immense quantity of rain fell and considerable damage was done to stores in low-lying parts by floods. Honey, in jars : First award, G. W. Epping, Normanby, Taranaki, and Moritzson and Hopkins, Dunedio, second awards; Colonel Morris, Queenstown, for honey in the comb, first and second awards. Preserved beef : second award, Gear Company, Wellington, and R. Tillow. No awards have been made to New Zealand ham, bacon or butter. Another dairy show will be held about November. The following tips for the Dorby have been published : — Volley, Wycombe, Pearl Sbell, in the order named.
