Those on 6oard the vessel returned the fire, but no casualties were reported. It is not known whether the firing party ashore were whites or natives. A heavy thunderstorm past-el over the city to-day. Wimble's warehouse and the National Bank were both struck by lightning, and the flag poles on the top of the latter building were shattered but no serious damage was done, During the storm an immense quantity of rain fell and considerable damage was done to stores in low-lying parts by floods. Honey, in jars : First award, G. W. Epping, Normanby, Taranaki, and Moritzson and Hopkins, Dunedio, second awards; Colonel Morris, Queenstown, for honey in the comb, first and second awards. Preserved beef : second award, Gear Company, Wellington, and R. Tillow. No awards have been made to New Zealand ham, bacon or butter. Another dairy show will be held about November. The following tips for the Dorby have been published : — Volley, Wycombe, Pearl Sbell, in the order named. Latest betting— Metropolitan Stakes : 5 to 1 Aberconij 100 to 18 Boneydew and Lamond, 100 to 14 Frisco, 100 to 10 Arsenal, 100 to 9 Touchstone, 100 to 8 CardigaD, 100 to 5 Elsie and Leichatdt, 100 to 3 Pet Girl, 100 to 1 The Nun.
