OTTAWA, April 8. The Dominion House of Commons has rejected the motion tabled by Sir R. Oartwrigbt favouring unrestricted trade reciprocity with the United Statei, by a majority of 57. MELBOURNE, April 9. A ma»B meeting of railway hands on Saturday carried a resolution protesting against the administration of Mr Allison Smith, Assistant Locomotive Superintendent, accusing him of causing an accident by altering the balancing of the whet>lp, and viewing his retention in the service with alarm. A further resolution demanded that a board of railway experts should inquire into his fitnoss for office. The Ballarat Coffee Palace fire was a very serious affair. The inmates were imprisoned in th« burning building by the falling in of the staircase, but a sailor who happened to be in the place made ropes out of the clothes, and succeeded in keeping most of the rest cool till they were lowered. A few, however, leaped from the windows an'i wore hurt. The spectators for a long time feared that a number must be burned. Two walls fell in, but the firemen escaped injury.
