Cheap and Good.

Tho Wallace County Council recently com pleted the erection of a bridge over Jacobs river at Dunrobin, which, from its moderate cost and effectiveneia for all but wheeled? traffic, should prove an admirable type for many of the rivers in the coloDy where the coat precludes the erection of more substaii-

tial structures. The County Engineer (Mr D. JDurbridge) has kindly supplied us (Western Star; with the following particulars regarding same, The bridge is in one span, 120 ft, constructed on the latticegirderprinciple.suspende l from 4-iooh ste?]|wire cobles by 5-8 rods. Its total coat wae about J. 250, but of course tlis cost oi a similar structure will vary according to the nature of the banks. Oa the south side the bridge is built from the ?olid rock ; on the north it reßts on a concrete foundation. The columns are lfi feet, high, built of angle iron and braced by 3-3-10 steel braces, and are Jbolted at bottom with lin boltß, The cables pass over saddles on the tops of columns, and are secured in chambers to circular plates and railway iron set in blocks of concrete. The ends of the cables are secured together with 3in clips and seized ■with steel wire. The girders are 2ft 6in in depth ; the flaor is of longitudinal planking, 2in thick, secured by £in bolts to angle irons at all pints and intersections, On the norcb. 6td<z the basement fa protected against floods by a breastwork of masonry, This extends back from the base for half a chain. The approach on the south side is cut through solid rock, and on the north is made up with earth and gravel to ihe levd of the floor of the bridge. The breaking strain of the cables is some 80 tons, so that care haa been taken to make ths structure as strong as possible. The bridge was constructed by Mr J. Johnbton, of the Vulcan Foundry, lavercxrgiil, who deserves greac credit for the faithful manner in which the work has been exerutrd. It will therefore be seen that there is no mceselty for going outeide onr own district for works of the nature referred to. The bridge will prove a great convenience in the locality, and will obviate the danger of Io«s of life.

In coonrcii;n with this subject we may gay that those deßirous of. gaining a good idea of what this bridge is like can obtain some fir«t-ela*B photos of it and its surroundings from Mr D. Boss, Tsy street. We must compliment Mr Ross on having produced in thtse views extremely good and interesting works , the foregrounds giving sn excellent conception of what a brawling New Ztaland river iB like.
