The right to work the reef will be acquired by the Company .by purchase from its present proprietors for the sum of £1500 —£500 to be in cash and £1000 in shares in the Company paid up to Is 6d. Ths area held by the proprietary is 32 acres, consisting of Turnbull's Lease of 16 acres and Johnstone'a Leaie of 16 acres (both adjoining). The plan attached to the prospectus shows a longitudinal section along the line of the reef. It is proposed to put in an adit-level or tunnel along the line of the reef. About 40 tons of stone have been obtained by sinking on the reef in TurnbuH's Lease, which averaged oyer 4oz. of gold to the ton In sinking, a very considerable quantity of •water was met with, so much indeed that it was throwing money away to attempt to open up the reef by means of shafts. The reef has been traced for nearly the whole length of theleaseß, running east and west. The Serpentine Diggings were in the early days renowned for thtir rich yields from the alluvial ground. These rich patches were in most cases found in tke gullies leading from the dividing range. Of all the gullies none were richer in gold than t- c head of tbe gully kno<»n as Mosan'e, starting at tr.e saddle and falling into Long Valley from 800 to 1000 feet below the saddle: and the gully starting from the same saddle and leading (west to east) toward the Serpentite township and known as Golden Gully. It has always been maintained by the miners working there — more particularly by the Messrs Moßan—that there l ■ a rich quartz reef in the gully falling into Long Valley, as in working the cully rich specimens of gold-b-aring quartz were frequently taken from the al'uvial wash. A lease of 10 acres had been seemed, which afterward became the property of Mr Kobert Tumbull, of Linnburn Station ; and about two years ago a party of miuors were (by permission) sluicing in the gully on the 6ide of the old workings when they exposed the reef bo long looked for. Mr Turnbull at once com m?nced sinking on the reef and took out a trial crushing of 20 ton°, whi ;h was crushed at the battery some two miles distant, resulting in 4cz of gold ta the ton. A subsequent crushing of 20 tons yielded 4^oz. to the ton, but it was obtained with great difficulty and expense, owing to the influx of large bodies of water. The fill of the gully toward Lone Valley is comiderab c. beincr not leas than 500 ft in the first 40 chains. It thus became evident that the proper mode of working the reef was by an adit-le el or tunnel. The ground below was taken up by Messrs Johnstone and Co., and the reef has been traced for a considerable distance into Johnstone's lease. By amalgamating the two leases now before th^ public the difficulty andexpecseof driving through a long stretch of barren c untry until the .reef wag met on I tne w«Btern boundary of Turnbull's lease will I be obviated; and it is now proposed to drive on the line of the resf from the point in Johnstone's lease (whtre shown on the planaßove referred to). This tunrel will be about 18 chains in length to reach 1 urnbull's gold at a depth of 247 feet below the shbf t; but it will be plain to all experienced miners, and reasonable to expect that in thus driving on the reet itself ("hoots of goldbearing stone may be met with from the very outset. In that case the cost of the tunnelling will be reduced, and the mine opened up long before the adit reaches th« length of Turnbull's shaft, and the property thns become one of the most valuable and 1 easiest worked in this colony. Water rights can be obtained for a turbine wheel to work the battery; and the site of the battery can be so placed t&at the quartz can b» delivered from the trinnel mouth by a shoot directly into the machine It is estimated that after the preliminary expenses of opening the mine have been met, and the work of tunnelling fairly commenced, it will not be necessary to make calls oftener than once every two months. Applications fdr shares to be made to the Secretary, J- T. Brooke Hickaon, Naseby. accompanied by P. 0.0., cheque or bank draft for amount due on application. Remittances may, however, be sent direct to the Bank of New Zealand, Naseby. Prospectuses and plans can be obtained at any of the Goldfields Agencies of the Bank of New Zealand, at the office of this paper or from he Secretary at Naseby. se3o
