Criticism of Public Men.

m TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — From the report of the last meeting of the Hospital Committee it is evident that melodrama is not confined to Ploan'a Theatre. I can imagine the dramatic effect, as, waving bit arms, Mr Bain '' threw back with s c-o-r-n the vile slander," &c, &c, and the equally pathetic remarks of the chairman. But there is something more than the dramatic effect of a personal explanation in Mr Raia's action. Does Mr Bain wish to buike the privilege extended by the Press to the citizens 1 If so, let him say so. I wish to claim the privilege to criticise the action of oar public men so long as I " nothing extenuate, nor aught set down in malice," and I claim to have kept within the lines of fair criticism Mr Bain in running a tilt at somebody, but let me assure him he is at tea in the matter. Ido not often write to the papers, and have not, like Mr Bain, the advantage of being an old newspaper man, I therefore hope, Mr Editor, that Mr Bain's remarks will not induce you to withdraw from me the privilege of criticmse the public actions of any public man. — I am, &c. Citizen.
