Charge of Manslaughter.
* [By Telegraph.] Christchurch, July 29. An inquest held to-day on the body of Mrfi Katherine Rees, wife of George Manning Rees, a printer, reaidiug at Knightbtown, a suburb of Cbristchurch, resulted in a verdict of manslaughter against the husband. The evidence showed that Mrs Rees had died rather suddenly on Wednesday evening. She had been ailing for so_e months, and had been discharged from the hospital six weeks ago. Rees was in the habit of drinking too much, and his wife complained to a constable shortly before her death that he had struck her several times when she was ill and handled her several times very roughly. The deceased had sometimes been known to drink excessively. Corroborative evidence waa given as to the bad conduct of Rees to his wife, but he denied the allegatiana. It waa stated tbat a minister of religion had to provide nourishment for the woman and her family in consequent of Reea' neglect. Tie medical evidence showed that the woman had Buffered from pulmonary conaumption, and was in such a Btate that any rough treatment would hasten her doath. Tbe jury found that death was accelerated by general neglect. This waa tantamount to a verdict cf manslaughter upon which charge Rees waa forthwith arrested.
