E.ILS. Inflexible is the first instance of a ship built with a chamber extending -from side to side, and containing a body of water the motion of which, following the rolling of the ship, checks that rolling. Some, experiments were made the practical value of the device in 1883, and some recent experiments have been made with~H.M.S. Edmb.nrgh. Amodel bas been . exhibited consisting of a trough capable of containing water, and suspended so that it might oscillate like a pendulum. Water was poured into the trough, and it was set in motion, and the time notedat which the motion was extinguished. The experiment was tried with various quantities of water, and then it was shown in whattiespect the aciion~of water would similarily decrease rolling in a ship. Be^ults of the water-chamber device were also compared with the effect of bilge keels in reduring rolling. "The writer of a paper on the ' subject went at some length into the question of -the diverse character Of rolling in a seaway in waves coperiodic or disperiodic with the ship, . or irregular, and comes to the following conclusion:—"ln this paper I have not had time to consider how the safety of a ship must limit the extent of the space or spaces set apart for this purpose, but it appears that supposing the safety of the ship not endangered, rolling may be reduced by this means to almost any extent."
