The Gazette notifies tbe appointment of W. Craig and W. J. Willcocks as members of the Bluff Harbour Board, and of S. Hodgkinson, M. Instone and George Reid as members of the Riverton Harbour Board. J. K. Lea (Winton), and D. Campbell (Invercargill), are appointed assessors for the Southland Property Assessment District. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. ' The Kaiapoi Wooilen Factory Co. waß fined Ll to-day for allowing 45 women to remain in a workroom during meal time. It was stated for the defenco that the women remained frcm choice. Several other firms were also fined for breaches of the Employment of Females Act. A conference of the City Council witb other local bodies having jurisdiction adjacent to the city was held to-day, and it was decided to take measures to endeavour to securo an alteration in the Healtb Act to enable these bodies to, combine as. a Board of Health for Christeburch and suburbs. The floods in North Canterbury have subsided, but considerable damage has been done in some places to tbe railway lines and to tho land through scouring. It is also feared tbat many cattle have been drowned. The weather is still unsettled. TIMARU, Thubsday. ' The weather now shows. signs of improving, and so far no serious damage is reported. At the Harbour Board to-day the revenue for the Jpast six months showed an increase of LBOO on the corresponding period of last year. On tbe advice of the Manager of the N.Z.L. and M.A Co., a committee was appointed to draw np a report as to the best steps to get the present high rate of insurance _on vessels at Timaru reduced. OAMARU, Thubsday. On the 3rd inst. the Oamaru Hospital Committee passed a resolution against the bringing into force of the Hospitals tod Charitable Aid .Bill. passed the following resolution to be for- ' warded to, the members for-the town and district :— Tbat the present mode of dealing with the relief of the .poor, viz., bysudsidising voluntary efforts to. the extent of £ for & is the best and most acceptable to this community, while the idea of pauperism and poor rates is repugnant to the sympathetic mind and the best feelings of the community, and hot to be forced upon such a young country ; this meeting is further of opinion that the Charitable Aid -Bill now before the Assembly is cumbrous and expensive ; and tbat what ought to go ae subsidy to voluntary contributions will be swallowed up by salaries, officialism, ahd buildings. DUNEDIN, Thursday. The Harbour Board have granted their Engineer leave of absence to inspect tbe Riverton wharf . Mr Driver, who contested the Bruce seat with Mr Gillies, has declined to stand for the vacancy. Two or tbree .local candidates are likely to como forward, and probably Mr W. A. Murray, the former member, will be asked to come south again. '
