Inthe House of Commons. last night, Sir Michael Hicks Beach announced to the House the programme of legislation to be brought down by the Government. It includes, among other things, a measure for facilitating federation in various parts of the Empire. Mr Gladstone spoke, and announced that the Opposition acquiesced in the proposals of tho Government. An early close of the session is looked forward to. At to-day's wool sales 6400 bales were submitted. Prices were steady but the demand was not active. Arrived — Oamaru, from Wellington (April 8tb) ; Waitangi, from Napier (March 29th). July 9. A Royal Commission has been appointed to examine and enquire into the causes of the present depression in trade in England. CAIRO, July 8. Sir Evelyn Baring, British Minister here, left to day for London. (SPECIAL TO PRESS ASSOCIATION). LONDON, July 9. Four thousand French troops are to Le sent to Madagascar in compliance with Admiral Michot's request for further reinforcements. Tbe Marquis of Salisbury's policy has been favourably commented on by the St. Petersburg and Continental Press.
