Proposals counter to those made by the British Government in November for the settlement of Egyptian finances have now been put forward by the French Ministry, and have received the support of Austria, Germany, and Russia. The refusal of the Victorian Government to accept the offer of nineteen bhilltngs in the pound from the liquidators of the Oriental Bank estate has been brought before the Courts, and Justice Chittygave judgment in the matter to-day, deciding that colonial statutes do not affect the claims of the Victorian Government upon the estate. Evening. M. Waddinaton, French Minister in London, has presented counter proposals by the French Government for the settlement of Egyptian finances to Lord Granville. The proposals comprise a loan of L 9,000,000 sterling, issued und*r the guarantee of the Great Powers, a tax on all coupons, Egyptian bonds, and the appointment of a commission of enquiry into the resources of Egypt.
