The Mayoral Eelections.

Wednesday, 26th November. INVERCARGILL. The election of a mayor for the town j was attended with considerable interest, and the contest was conducted throughout in the most lively and energetic manner. It was anticipated that the fight would be a very even one ; that which ever candidate won would do 80 by a small majority, and therefore the partisans of the two opponents used every means and put forth every effort for the return of their particular man. Cabs were flying around all . day, bearing the usual electioneering devices, and emissaries from each camp were busy everywhere endeavoring to induce the doubtful to recognise the virtues of their respective chiefs. About 6 p.m. a large number of ratepayers, proba'ily 300, assembled in front of the Municipal Offices, and about twenty minutes later, The Returning Officer (Mr W. B. Scandrett) appeared and announced the result of the poll to be as follows : — George EVoggatt 384 Daviu Koche ... 215 Majority for Mr Froggatt 169 The declaration was received with cheers. Mr Froggatt said he thanked the ratepayers heartily for the honor they had conferred upon him. The contest had been carried out in the best spirit and with good feeling between all parties. He trusted that, if spared to till the office he was elected to, he would perform his duties in such a manner that he would be justified in expecting the same confidence again from the citizens. He would endeavor to fill the office with credit to himself and the town. — (Cheers). Mr Roche expressed his thanks to those who had supported him. He would not dwell on any matters coanected with the election ; b.t> was well satisfied with the result and he supposed they all were. There were many subjects upon which he might speak, but he scarcely thought it would be necessary for him to do so. He agreed with Mr Froggatt that the election had been carried oat fairly and aboveboard, and he was content to abide by the result. — (Cheers). The customary vote of thanks to the Returning Officer concluded the proceedings.
