(from our own correspondent.) Our debating societies still continue to flourish, and afford the residents and visitors ample opportunities of spending pleasant and profitable evenings. An able and interesting paper on. ": The English Language," by Mr Robertson, occupied the attention of : the Gordon Society _ last week. Mr Robertson dealt with bis subject in a very instructive manner, and the after discussion was favorable to the views of the writer. - The next subject is "Land Nationalisation," introduced by Mr John MacGribbon.
We have been visited by the keenest frost that has been experienced in this district for years past, the ground, for. two entire days being as wbite as if a light fall of snow had occurred.
The second "black list '* of amounts intended to be levied by the Wdimea Hailway Company ia published, aaci from a perusal thereof, I deem it the moat iniquitous and oppressive tax that, any district in this new. country ever labored under. The amounts vary from 10s up to over kW, only 009— the Agricultural
Company's — being much above the latter sura. This Company, whose rate is L 2530, is less to be pitied than many of these to whom land has been sold V them, as there ia no doubt but that t;.e property already sold, as wtll as that stil! iv the hands of the company, hasbe»n in-reased in value to a very considerable extent by the construction of the line. Several of the principal ratepayers have bdon summoned, and we await the decision of the R.M. Court with some interest. If defeated tbere, an appeal will be made to a higher, and thus the evil day kept as far away as possible. I observe that very large quantities of grain are being sent down from the Waimea Plains ; a much greater jinX.b' ing tinder cultivation thieyear than previously, Orir'school is fairly well attended just now, considering the weather. The date of tbe Inspector's annual examination is fast approaching, and certainly it does not happen at the most favorable season for the country districts, as many of the pupils are very irregular in their attendance during the winter months. A weeks' holiday has ;been granted by the committee to enable the teachers 1o attend the annual conference, held next week in your city. 2oth June.
