Messrs Wrieht, Stephenson and Co. report for the week ending 9th May as follows : — Fat Cattle.— A fair supply came forward, 241 head being yarded, consisting for the most part of medium quality; some lots, indeed, were little, better than stores. The demand for good cattle was very brisk, and for such the advance reported last week was fully maintained. We sold 104 head from £9 12s 6d to £12. Best bullocks fetched from £8 2s 6d to £12 ; best cows from L 6 7s 6d to L 8 17s 6d. We quote prime beef at 25s per 1001 b; medium, 20s. Privately, at a satisfactory figure, we have placed 100 head for forward delivery. Fat Sheep. — The market .was completely glutted to-day, no less a numberifchan 4028 being penned ; and fully one half of these were cvossbreds of prime quality. Bidding was devoid of spirit, even at prices showing a redaction of from Is 6d to 2s per head on last week's quotations, and in several instances owners had to take their sheep back unsold. Wepenned 2250, and sold 1900 of them as jfollows :— 709 merino ewes at 9S 6d j 54 prime three-quarter-bred wethers at 15s 6d; 22 extra prime crossbreds at 15s 3d; 119 prime crossbreds at from 13s 3d to 13s 9d; 120 halfbreds at from Us 3d to 12s ; 308 prime crossbreds at 12s 4d ; 174 crossbred ewes at 10s 9d ; 50 prime crossbred wethers at 13s 3d ; 58 crossbred ewes at lls ; 129 crossbreds at,l2s; 5G prime crossbreds at 13s 9d. We quote pork at from 4d to 4^d per Ib. Store" Cattle.— The demand for both grown and young cattle has fallen off greatly, so much bo that it is almost impossible to place them at any price now. At the Burnside Yards to-day, we sold a draft of 30 head three-year-old bullocks at from L 3 to L 4 per head. Store Sheep. — We have inquiries for 8000 crossbred wethers, and also for 5000 young merino wethers. At auction, during the week, we have sold several small lots at full rates. Horses. — First-class heavy draughts are in demand, bnt light and weedy descriptions are very . difficult to sell. Last Saturday a large number — chiefly of medium draughts — came to hand, and a good many of them changed hands, at current rates. Sheepskins.— For our Monday's sale we catalogued a very large number of skins, chiefly town butchers' lots. The demand, however, was ' not brisk, and prices in consequence much lower than last week. Butchers' green-skins, crossbreds, fetched up to 2s, and merinos up to Is lOd ; station skins fetched from Is to 5s Id. Hides, — With a brisk inquiry, all coming to hand are readily placed at from 3d to 4d per lb for ordinary lots, and up to 4£d for extra heavies. This week we have sold 231 at quotations. Grain. — Wheat: We have buyers for goodsized lines of wheat of first quality (free from sprout) for delivery here, but have no transactions of importance to|note. We quote choicest samples at from 4s 2d to 4s 3d per bushel; medium, 3s Sd to 4sj fowl wheat, 2s t)d to 3a 3d. Oats : The demand for export foe bright milling oats— heavy short feed and long Tartarian oats — continues good, and all lots coming to hand meet with prompt sale at quotations. This week we have placed 16,000 bushels. We quote best milling, Is lOd to Is lOid; short feed. Is 9d to Is 10d; Danish, nominally" Is 9d, but no demand.
