The Southland Times. PUBLISHED DAILY. Luceo Non Uro. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30th, 1882.

By a substantial majority the ratepayers of Invercargill have placed Mr John Kingsland in the position of Mayor elect, and this result will not surprise any who know bis antecedents and the feelings with which he is regarded by the general community. Mr Kingsland's elevation is the reward of long municipal service, and an acknowledgment of the part he has played for so many years as an enterprising and industrious citizen. Viewed as such a reward, the great bulk of the inhabitants, including a large number of those who voted against him, will wish him all joy of bis success. The expectation is warranted that he will make a good executive officer and that he will worthily and ably preside over the deliberations Of the Council. For ourselves, notwithstanding our difference with him, which we have openly declared, we do not in. the least grudge him his victory We have already expressed the opinion that in regard to the matter on which wo disagree with him, there will be little opportunity for his idiosyncrasy working any harm. He will follow up, to a certain point, the policy that has been inaugurated of deepening the New River channel, and when his term of office shall have expired, he may hand over the reins to one who will be more willing than he to carry that policy further. It is possible for Mr Kingsland to signalise his year of office by devising some scheme, at once effective and economical, of bringing a supply of pure water into the town for sanitary purposes, and for the purpose of subduing fires. The Mayor-elect has declared his sense of the need of such a provision, and he will find, both within and outside of the Council, many willing coadjutors. We imagine that the mere fact that the scheme for the consolidation of the muncipal debt was proposed by his opponent will be no bar to his giving it serious consideration and that support to which we think its merits entitle it. There are perhaps other subjects connected with the good of the town to which Mr Kingsland's active mind may be directed, and it is possible that he may render his mayoralty famous. At any rate we wish him a prosperous terra oi office, and health to enjoy the honor that has been conferred on him.
