Winton.
(PROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
The Minister for Public Works paid us a brief visit on Saturday afternoon, when he ■was met at the station by a deputation of residents in the Winton district, headed by his Worship the Mayor, C. D. Moore, Esq. The mayor introduced the town clerk, Mr Lea, who read a memorial from the leading inhabitants of the town and district, asking for the construction of the Nightcaps railway along the reserved route, and the extension of the Forest Hill tramway, and the opening- of the section already completed. In reply, the Minister stated that the official order for the opening of the completed part should be at once given on hifl return to Wellington, and that the work of extension should be at once put in hand, andthe vote expended thereon. No money having been voted for the Winton and Nightcaps railway, the Minister could say but little on that matter, but would consider the reasons stated in the memorial read for its being constructed. No other matter having been brought forward the deputation, after thanking the Hon. Mr Johnston for his courtesy, withdrew, and the special train by which he travelled proceeded on its way for the Lake District.
