«. [By Telegraph.] (from our own correspondent.) Wellington, Aug. 29. The Rabbit Nuisance Act Amendment Bill was received from the Legislative Council and read a first time. Mr Daniel tabled the following question to-day : — To ask the Minister for Lands whether he will cause the Southland Waste Lands i Board to throw open the land lately surveyed by Mr John Hay, for sale on de-ferred-payments, from the land^under that system at Orepuki to tbe East Bank of the Waiau river. He also presented a petition from Morgan Hayes and 38 other inabitants of South Riverton, praying that the Minister of Public Works will cause a platform,'shelter shed and siding to be erected for the accommodation of the inhabitants residing there ; seeing that if they wish to go to (Jolac Bay, Round Hill and Orepuki goldfields they have to walk 1£ miles to the Riverton station. The following are tabled as motions on going into committee of supply : — That there should be a progressive land tax on all arable land not under cultivation held by any landowner who owns land in excess of 500 acres in extent. — That encouragement should be given to local productions for export by a readjustment of the. rates of railway freight. — That it appears to this House that the freight of agricultural produce is too high, and that the railway tariff should be re-adjusted with a view to asnbstantial reduction before the next grain season.
