The Awarua Election: An Explanation.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — Permit me to correct a mistake that occurs in the report of what I said at Clifton, when 1 replied to a statement made by Mr Smyth at South Invercargill, to the effect that he had always voted for me, for the House, Provincial Council, Boad Board, and County Council. In the report, I am reported to have said " He remembered, however, when he was the opponent of Sir Francis Dillon Ball, he asked Mr Smyth to vote for him, but he said he was too bußy,and had not time." What I said was, that when I opposed Sir Francis D. Bell, Mr Smyth's views and mine were in accord, and he supported me, but they had gradually diverged, and I really did not know how Mr Smyth voted when I opposed Mr Shanks. For the Road Board 1 believe Mr Smyth never voted for me, and when the last elections for the County Council took place, a friend of mine asked Mr Smyth to vote for me, but he replied that he had no time to vote. — I am, Ac, Ampriw Km boss. Myross Buih, Nov. 25, 1881.
