WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The Chief Commissioner (Mr W. H. Pearson), ancl Messrs Mitchell, Lumsden, Toshach, Denniston, and Kinross, attended the weekly meeting of this Board yesterday. Mr Melvin again appeared, asking that survey lines upon his sawmill application at Myross Bush be dispensed with, on grounds stated in last week's report. — Request complied with. Robert Wells appeared, and asked for protection for a house he had erected on bush reserve on block 7, Invercargill Hundred. He explained that he had put up the house under the impression that the land belonged to Mr Lee. — Resolved, that Messrs Tapper & Lee be informed of Wells's claim, and that the application would be heard next week. Ranger Mussen reported favorably Hpon the application of Mr Fosbinder, that the heart of the Titipua Bush reserve, adjoining the Makarewa liiver, should be opened for sale. He stated that the hnd was of superior quality, .but was liable to be flooded. There was no great extent of bush ppon it. Mr John Brown wrote,-,sup-porting Mr Fosbinder's recommendation. — Resolved, that the land be put up to auction in three 200-acre farms at au upset price of £1 per acre. W. J. Mullany applied for a title to section 15, block 47, Ettrick street, Invercargill, under the Immi«r.rants' Land Act, having fulfilled the prescribed conditions. — Ranger to report. The Inspector of Forests reported that the quantity of timber eut on Crown forests during the past month and passed through the sawmills of the district was 805,132 feet, and the rovalty amounted to £100 12s 7d. Messrs P. Grant and Co. wrote, offering to conduct sales of Crown lands in the Western District on similar terms to those on which sales were conducted in Invercargill by Mr Osborne. — Resolved, that in event of any sales taking place, Messrs Grant and Co. be communicated with. • Ranger Mussen reported that he had inspected deferred-payment sections 22'J, 233, and 228, Taringatura district — the licensees (John Tosh, Margaret Moran, and Benjamin Tosh) having made application to be permitted to purchase. The conditions had been fully complied with. — Applications to purchase granted. The following applications for village allotments were granted: — Wm. Glittery, section (I, block 3, Wairio, oa; Win. McPherson, section 2, bloek 4, Wairio, 2r: J. C. Eilis, section 14, block 2, Wairio, oa lr 20p; T. C Ellis, section IG, block 2, Wairio, s>a 3r 39p; C. C. Ellis, section 17, block 2, Wairio, oa Or 37p. The Chief Commissioner, who lately visited Stewart Isiaud, stated that he was of opinion that the whole of thc applica- ■ tions for Jand made recently should be refused, and the land temporarily reserved, as there were not wanting indications that portions of it were auriferous. As to settlement on the Island, he. thought tho price of £2 per acre absurdly high, and said that if the Board wished to induce men to make homes there they should let the land go foi' los per acre. Mr Denniston — Hear, hear. — Resolved that the resolution passed at last meeting granting a certain area in Paterson district to Mr McArdell be rescinded, and the depoeit money returned: ancl that the whole of the land in the immediate vicinity be temporarily reserved from sale. Resolved, that run 302b and 190d, previotish' exposed for sale by auction but not sold, bere-advertised for sale at an upset of Ud, run lUOn being divided into two runs by the Ilaydon Creek. The Board then rose.
