! , The following summary of Intercolonial news was brought by the Claud Hamilton, which arrived atthe Bluff last evening:— NEW SOUTH WALES. ; A desperate encounter has .occurred with bushrangers. A gang -of six men, headed by a man claiming to be the notorious Captain Moonlight, stuck-up the Wantabadgery station, 25 miles east of Wagga Wagga, early on a Sunday v morning. Nineteen hands were bailed'up for ten hours. The manager at first proved intractable, but after receiving several kicks he apologised on his knees, and was sent on to the roof of the building to keep watch.' When the mail boy arrived the mail bag was seized, but Alexander McDonald, the boy, escaped and brought the news to Wagga Wagga. Four troopers left in pursuit, arriving at daybreak on Monday. The bushrangers were atthe station homestead, and one came out and '• refused to surrender, whereupon the police fiiied. Others of the gang attacked the police, and a hot contest ensued, and lasted over two hours. The marauders approached the police in a semicircle, compelling to them to .retire to a neighboring station, leaving their horses behind. They were subsequently reinforced by five police from Grundagai, and started in pursuit of the bushrangers, overtaking'them about two miles from tho station. Here another serious engagement followed , and the fight lasted an hour, and was witnessed by a large number of people x who had posted themselves on the neighboring hills. One bushranger being shot dead by Constable Bowen, the rest took shelter, and then Bewen succeeded in shooting another dead, being himself seriously wounded in the neck. A third bushranger was wounded in the arm; two others surrendered, and the remaining one escaped. The gang also stuck np a store -ai Clarendon, and robbed the mail. when trying- to join the police,- and Beveridge was compelled to shoot hia valuable horse. They were then courtmartialled by the gang, and allowed five minutes to live. Fortunately the attackin^ force of police 'arrived '^before the sentence was executed. • A Inan 'cWliife himself Moonlight, one of the prisoners, is uninjured.
