THE LATE FIRE.
Editor Times,— ,Oh behalf of some , of those citizens Avho assisted at the late fire iri Deveron street, and, unfortunately, it seems, had a glass of beer at the expense of the Corporation, Avould you allow me, through your valuable paper, to ask Councillor "Kingsland how he comes to class us as. loafers ? Is it because Aye did not do as, perhaps, Mr Kingsland did, stand with our hands in our pockets, and find fault Avith the workjng of the Fire Brigade .and all those who exerted themselves in saving property ? Or, is it because a feAv of us went and manned the fire' engine, arid so let free the firemen to work the ladders and hose, and after having worked hard pump : ng, got a glass of beer at the expense of the Corporation, that we are to be put doAvn as loafers, and that by one of our worthy councillors and' late" captain of the Fire Brigade? I 'think, Mr Editor, it is rather too hot for those avlio work hard on such occasions to be called loafers, Avhile those "who stand with their hands in in their pockets can console themselves with being gentlemen, and that on the authority of a City Councillor. — I am, &c, Old Firejtax. |
