There were not more than 2000 spectators at;any time, and the day was rather cool,-in fact.it rained slightly in* the morning. Fulton, the Otago captain, won the toss and senilis men in. It was expected that they would make a good score, but the bbwh_gwas too good arid the wicketf astj which' made Ashby very deadly. MdjTeil, Vernon,'Crawshaw, Haskell, and Spring all played '.well, and stayed" iri a long time, but they djd^nOt make many runs, and the total was only 77. Canterbury began very badly, as they lost three of their best wickets almost straight off. 'Ollivjer bit hard, however, and Ashby "played a steady innings, defying all the bowlers.-, W. Frith played excellently, and almost carried his bat. The catches 'which" disposed' of Moore'' and Ashby were two of the finest ever seen, and were loudly cheered. The Canterbury innings closed for 163, a good many less than anticipated. "Paramor bowled well throughout, but the others were not successful.
