THE MATAURA ELECTION.
Though the complete returns of the polling for the vacancy in the representation of Mataura are not yet to hand, the issue may be said to be practically decided, the result being beyond all question the return of Mr Shanks. The numbers of votes recorded at all the polling places with the exception of Fortrose have been received, and these give the gentleman named a majority of 3&. The difficulties of communication with Fortrose prevented the return from the booth at that place being received last night, but while it is anticipated that it will increase the majority for Mr Shanks, it is not at all likely to turn the scale. The following are the returns with the exception of Fortross : —
Shanks. Kinross. Waihopai ... 124 ... 174 Canipbelltowu ... 14 ... 13 Gore ... ... 40 ... 12 Mataura ßridge ... 43 ... 3 Woodlands ... 15 ... 13 Roslyn Bush ... 0 ... 31 Wyntlham ... 52 ... 3 Fortrose ... — ... — Totals ... 288 ... 249
