The Southland Times PUBLISHED DAILY SATURDAY, 20th JULY, 1878.

m Co_BSi_r<_ Cl_B — The first round of the Waterloo Stakes was run off yesterday on the Club's coursing ground at Morton Mains, after having been postponed from the previous Wednesday on account of the snow. A slight covering still remained, but did not interfere with the running. The sport was oapital and the winner is yet very problematical. A full report will appear on Monday. Not G__c_. — A short time since we published a telegram from Wellington,»innouncing that bluck swans and hares within the district of Auckland bad been proclaimed not game. A Government Gazette to hand verifies this statement, both hares and swans must therefore be very plentiful in tho dietrict above mentioned. Mikstbbxs. — Mr George Lingard, ths advance agent for Messrs Cheevers, Kennedy, and Bent's Minstrels, made the most of his time while in Inveroargill, as the hoardings abundantly testify. The company wil arrive by the Arawata, and will open the Theatre Koyal on Monday evening. Such an array of talent will no doubt command a crowded attendance. iHSPECTIoy.— The Invercargill Volunteer Band underwent monthly inspection last night at the drill shed. Twenty-four members fe 1 in, and in th-j absence in Dunedin of the officer commanding the district, Major Hannah, were inspected by Captain Macrorie. Their condition was perfect. An adj >urnment to the Albion Hotel followed, the band there taking a long hour's practice, and discoursed some excellent music, includiag the New Zealand Anthem. Tbe master, Mr Heywood, conducted. Thb Gazette. — A Government Gazette recently pub isaed contains the following amongst other matters: —Tapanui has been proclaimed a rabbit district. ' Nichol's bond' at the Bluff has been appointed a bonded warehouse. An application, for a lease at Longwood by the Invercargill Quartz Mining Co., to be so termed, is duly notified, and aleo one by the Workingmen's Quartz Keef Co., in the same locality. Longwood.— We have secured a communication from a correspondent respecting the find in the prospectors* claim at Longwood. He said that two of hia friends upon whom he could thoroughly rely, visited the Hay. s* Brothers claim on Monday la-t, and were permitted to descend the shaft and examine the lode in the drive. Some who have examined the lode are inclined to question wether it is a true one or not. It i • described as being composed of rotten quartz, from two to three feet thick, lying in bluisb grey mullock, the walls being quite smooth and black as if they had been smoked. The ground is wat and greasy, the mullock dripping down the side of the reef. Gold was visible in the face of the 1 ode, and from a dish of stuff broken roughly from the lode, about half an ounce of gold was obtained. It was an excellent sample, some of it bein? the size of split peas, and so ou down to fine reef gold. Over a Bcore of persons saw the prospect , and all pronounoed it to be quite as good as any thing reported by the prospectors. P. Hayes and some of his friends crushed a handful of stuff at the Riverton Council Chamber on Thursday afternoon, and obtained ono dwt. of gold from it. Our correspondent further remarks thatthe late severe weather put a stop to all mining work at Longwood, nothing more than "shepherding" being done, but that the good results of the prospectors ' spec was certain to give the field a start. . .R_vaßTol!r,--Our correspondent writes t — The nomination for the office of Mayor took place on the 16th inst., at the Court-house. J. R. Mills, Esq., acted as returning officer, and Messrs D. Murchie and T. Daniel were the two candidates nominated. Mr Murchie did hot put in an appearance, possibly from a knowledge that strong personalities would^ be .indulged in by the opposition.' lam sorry to say .hat Mr Murohie's surmise proved correct, and instead of • the welfare ef the town being the topic introduced, nothing but personalities of ainost foolish nature were uttered jgainst the .present Mayor, but nothing w*s sajd against Mr Daniel. Mr Daniel addressed: the peeting at considerable length regarding what he fiad done for the place, and after touching on different subjects in connection with! the

wants of the town, concluded by thanking i those present for hearing him, and hoped the i best man would be elected. - The poll is to be taken on the 22nd inst. A number of persons have beftovdpwn the shaft in tbe prospectors' claim' $ifp}ie tongwood. but as not one of them was a practical man I shall not give you any account of .their inspeot on, o ly that they all think it a grand reef. SO coon * as I oan obtain an opinion from a' practical ■■ man I will send you a full report;
