The construction- of : this«Jine s will, unite Eingston and) the \V akatip, bnd ji tbe- .Oreti, Waimea, and Five Bivers Plains '(being the moßt fertile and extensive dis'ricts of the' South, but almost devoid of timber) with tbe coal field ; and from the supply of fuel to these districts alone, a large amount of traffic may be safely calculated upon. Adding to this the coal trade with Invercargill and Winton, and the other localities affected by the line, it may be safely asserted that too proiect which has yet been, submitted -fori' the construction of a railway in New Zealand, contains within itself so essentially the elements of success as the proposed Winton and Nightcaps line. The coal of the Nightcaps having been chemically and mechanically tested by scientific gentlemen and engineers being declared to combine all the characteristics of true coal, is as. article which from its excellent quality must come into general use. It iB estimated that at least 20,000 tons of coal will te conveyed along the line during the -first year of itß .working and thiß independently, of ■thei f general trade' pf the districts intersected^' will return - a lar_e interest on capital, after payment of working expenses. An extensive tract of iertile agricultural land in the Oreti Plains and Jacob's River Valley, will be opened up by th.s railway, which is Bhut out by any other projected route. No engineering difficulties ocour throughout the line selected, and the nature of the ground traversed guarantees' effective maintenance of the permanent' way at small fcost. land for construction has been with some trifling exception reserved or granted free of cost. The Share list will close on lßt September, and iv the allotment of Shares priority of application will be considered. THOMAS PERKINS, Secretary. Eldon Chambers, : July sth. 1878.
