Mitchell, Esq., Invercargill. j HIS Company is formed for the purpose of constructing under the provisions of The District Bailways Act, 1877, a line of ' x -•> *:,*;— the Waimatuku Flat on the nvercargill- Krveruu- .»_„-_.,, „_ -~- —» s „i, caps Coalfieldß, with a Branch to the Orawia Stream in the Waiau District, a distance in all of 40 miles. The provisiona 1 directors need only mention that to open up the imrat-me coalfields in the vicinity of Mount Nightcaps by railway communication with Invercargill and Riverton, is the primary object of the promoters in the constructing of this line of railway. For many years it has been known to geo» logi?ts and the public generally that the supply of coal at the Nightcaps is practically inexhaustible. The coal is of a superior quality, especially suitable for steam and gas purposes, and at a recent test of five sample* of the best Otago ooal for locomotive requirements, etood first on the list. Without rai'wiy communication these valuab'e coal deposits arepractica ly inaccessible, whilst Invercargill and Riverton are large consumers of imported cjal at high prices. From a careful investigation of the consumption of coal in and around Invercargill and Riverton, and for the railways south of Clinton, the provisional directors estimate ihe demand will *xceed S(JO tons perweek, and will constantly increase. The route of approach to the coa fields has received from the promoters the most careful consideration. From amongst a number ' of poßsible routes the present has been selected as opening up an immense arei of the finest agricultural land, thickly populated by an industrious and thriving class of Bettlers j at tbe 'same time reducing the distance as much as p< ssible between ihe coalfields and the chief centres of population. Ibis line is intended to start from tbe Waimatuku flat, at the new township of Waimatuku, a station on the InvercargillKrerton Kailway, proceeding in a*_ortherly direction through the magnificent plains of Waimatuku, Limestone, and Oreti, till it touches the south western corner of the deferred payment block at Heddon Bush, thence in a westerly direction, across Jacob's River to section 45 of block 4, Aparima Hundred ; thence in a northerly direction to the Nightcaps coalfields, with a branch 'rom section 45 aforpsai i to the O.awia s-veam in the \A aiau district. In addi ion to the' opening up of the magnificent land ol the aimaiuku Valley, and Oreti and I imesto c Piain*, thiß railway will render available the vast tract of splendid agricultural land comprised in the Aparima, Wairio, Merrivale, and Waiau districts, estimated at not less than 200,000 acres. At the Orawia terminus on the west is situated aii immense deposit of Limestone of the. finest quality, for which a large and increasing demand tor building and farming purposes exists in all parte of the Colony. The vast forests bf Woodlawand the Longwood, lying on either Bide of the proposed line, wid likewise contribute another source of permanent traffic, ai there is a constant and ever increasing demand ior timber, both in town and' country districts, as well as for exports at the adjacent Harbors bl Riverton 'and the Bluff. ' r ! The Provisional Directors feel confident .that the advantages accruing from the construction | ot this railway are such as will ensure; the ready and warm support of capitalists and the ' general publio. A •■ . ! | ; 'rhe Distriot Bailways Act, 1877, guarantees seven per cent, to shareholders on cost of construction; The proprietors of the lands through which the line' will pass have for the most part agreed to give the land required free of j
