WINTON.

(FBOM OUR OWN COXBXSPOKBXNi; The member* of Winton subdivision of the Makarewa Eoad Board met at Devereux's Wintoh Hotel, at half past 8 on Saturday night. Mr John Thomson, senior, was in. the chair. The reading and confirmation of the minutes constituted all the business done, and th« committee adjourned. A full meeting is to be held in Invercargill on Saturday next. The committee appointed to prepare a petition to the Gorernor in Council, in order to obtain the declaration of the Win ton riding a rabbit district, under the Babbit Nuisance Act 1876, met at the same place and hour. Mr Sproull was in the chair. A draft petition prepared by , Mr Keen was submitted and, with some I amendments, was adopted. It was ordered | to be engrossed, and sundry members of ! committee undertook to canvass for signatures. Professor Jacobs gate his entertainment at the Odd Fellows' Ball, to a tolerably good house on Saturday night. This young gentleman deserves better houses than he has had < here, and, when he appears in Invercargill, I predict for him a very successful run. His ventriloquism is complete, and he bas^ what many actors have not, the happy knack of going with good temper through the whole performance despite -the fact Uhatlthe audience is smalL His performance with his group of fire automatons is marvellous, and his distant ventriloquism is equal to anything I have witnessed. As a pianist Mr Jacobs is very pleasing., and his falsetto voice renders his entertainment excellently diversified. The decapitation trick did not come off, the stage, being unsuitable. The erection of Mr Devereux's Theatre will give greater facilities^ fbr business of this sort. Great incoavenienceis being experienced here-abouta by the non-delivery, of the evening mail. What is the use of the mail coming up if it is hot to be delivered till the following morning 1 The system is rotten. Ido not blame our postmaster one iota but I do blame the system which enacts such an absurdity. Practically we have but one mail a day, whereat two actually arrive. Winton, 4th February 1877.
