AUCKLAND, Wednesday. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company received the* following "-telegram :—" London, 9th December. The wool competition ia increasing, and the market is firmer up to date. OS thousand bales have be«n sold. Tallow is firm— mutton, 5Ls; reef, 48s per cwt. Leather — best sales showed Is 4d decline on previous rates. Adelaide wheat ia worth 51s ; New Z-aknd, 53s per 49G lbs. 16th December: The wool sales closed firmly: Sales comprise about 1.05,000 bales; 800 bales have been withdrawn. During the past sales, 30,000 bales were taken for export. A good many secondhand parcels were offered during past sales. Trade in the manufacturing districts is unchanged. The next sales commence on 15th February. |In reply to a deputation, Sir G. G-rey consented to contest the seat for the Thames. Mr Eobert Graham will stand with him. The criminal calendar contains five charges of wilful murder against four persons. Mr OVorke received a vote of confiience at a meeting of electors last night. "W ELLINGTON". Wednesday. This afternoon a quantity of the Cook's Straits cable, which had been coiled away under the Telegraph Office, was taken on board of the Luna. It will all be taken on board to-morrow, and a start made on Thursday. Alpin's music shop in Lambton Quay was burned down about four o'clock this morning. The stock is insured, £iOO in the Standard, £400 in the Imperial; building, £400 in the Standard. The value of the stock destroye-l is said to be about £1800. The origin of the fire is un known. When first seen, the flames were issuing from a skylight in the roof. The h.mse was uninhabited. Sapphire Man(?), the murderer, was caught in the bush yesterday. After runuing half a mile, when discovered, he gave in without resistance. He was brought up this morning, but was at ones sent oft' to the hospital to be identified by the dying men. The case stands adjourned-
