MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

♦ • The postponed ordinary meeting of the Municipal Council took place on Tuesday night. Present — His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Lumsden, G-arthwaite, Goodwillie, Cleave, Rose, and Goodsir. It was resolved to pve all the old workmen a fortnight's notice that their services will not be required at the present rate of wages, and that future workmen should consider their employment only temporary. A month's leave of absence was granted to the Clerk, Mr Soandrett, Mr Perrin to be temporarily employed in the meantime. On the motion that the tenders should be opened, Councillor Rose moved and Councillor Cleave seconded— That they be not opened until a report on ways and means had been received from the Finance Committee. In connection with his motion, Councillor Pose put some questions, to which the Mayor replied thai the Council was well iv funds, and that the .£16,000 gas debentures had been sold to the Bank of New Zealand for 85 net. It appeared that this course had beeu resolved upon at a public meeting of the Council, when only three councillors and the Mayor were present. Councillors Hose and Cleave condemned this course being taken by so few members, but His Worship argued that not those members who attended, but those who did not attend were deserving of censure. Councillor Rose maintained, and he was sure that a majority of the Council thought with him, that the debentures were worth over par, and they had been sold for lib net ! The sale would have to be cancelled. The motion, on being put, was lost on the voices. The tenders were then opened. That of George Browr. for work in Yarrow street, £368 10s, was accepted. — Smith's tender for metalling the cresceUt, £5 ss, was also accepted. The report of the Finance Committee, recommending the payment of accounts amounting ia all to £857 6s lOd, was adopted ; and so was that of the Sanitary Committee. Due attention having been paid to other business, mostly of a routine character, the Council adjourned.
