COLLEGIATE SCHOOL.
Tbe seventh half-yearly demonstration of the Invercargill Collegiate Scbool, which, under the tuition of Mr and Mrs Henri, has won for itself a most honorable reputation for efficiency, took place in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday night. As an index to the regard in which these exhibitions are held by the public, we may mention that the house was crowded in each of its compartments, and that many persons had to be refused admission to seats upstairs- It will be impossible for us, with the limited space at our disposal, to give a detailed account of the exhibition, which was from Jbeginnine; to end a successful one ; and we must content ourselves by stating that the pupils acquitted themselves in a manner which reflected the utmost credit on their intelligent • application, and the care and ability of their instructors, Mr and Mrs Henri, who, themselves, supplemented ■ the performances of the juveniles by singing some appropriate songs- A new feature in the entertainment was the substitution of a spelling-bee for ■ exercises in arithmetic and dictation. Messrs Cuthbertson, Bree, and Scandrett acted as judges of the spelling, which was excellent, the winners of first honors being Miss Thomson and Master Moffett. The volunteer cadets of the school were put through some very pretty movements by Captain Heywood, on the stage, The boys acquitted themselves admirably, and at the conclusion of the drill, Captain Heywood received a well merited compliment from tha audience- Everything was arranged so as to produce a just and legitimate effect, while there was an utter absence of shoddy theatricalism- Numerous prizes were awarded, and the following is the PRIZE LIST.
