4 (TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIJIE3 ) Sir,— l daresay you will allow me to add the following to your syllabus of errors : — Ist. Suicide as a verb. The noun comes from sui caedes, the slaughter of oneself- It cannot be used as a verb, as to slay of oneself is nonsense. The verb caedo takes an accusative, and if any such verb be necessary in English it ought to be secide2nd. Collide used in the sense of come into collision with. Collido is a transitive verb, meaning to knock together ; manus collidere is to clap the bands- Sometimes the passive is used in the sense of coiao into collision with, but the A inerican use of the word is barbarous,— -I am, Sir, yours obediently, A- B> ft j
