Auckland, Tuesday. The Bank of New Zealand halfyearly meeting, held to day, showed a net profitfor the halfyear.after providing for bad and doubtful debts of £47,102 ; balance undivided last half year, £16,974, total, £64,077. A dividend of 10 per ceut, and a bonus of five shillings per share, was declared. At the Bank of New Zealand halfyearly meetiHg, Mr Stone, in moving the adoption of the report, said that since ita commencement £920,000 had been paid in dividends, £180,000 to reserve fund, and £100,000 written off. The balance sheet showed the deposits and circulation to be £6,180,000, including one _ million and a half of the four million loan. The demand for accommodation during the past year had been very great. The directors believed that a return as favorable as that of to-day could be made on an increased capital, and they proposed therefore to issue ten thousand new shares, which will be first offered to the present shareholders at £15, viz., £3 below the present colonial value, payment for new shares not to be required before the first of January, from which date they will participate in the profits of the half yearThe deed of association is to be altered to increase the reserve fund. Referring to the Government accounts, the chairman said their possession had been the cause of so much jealousy that the bank would not feel aggrieved if they were submitted to public tender. He doubted whether the future condition of the Government, account? would be such jib to cnuae euvy. The chairman and Mr ¥• Whitaker spoke in strong terms of condemnation of Mr Bridges, the confidential adviser of the bank for 14 years. They had never known ita influence used for political purposes. The Union Steamship Company have telegraphed to John Darling, their building inspector at Home, to build and despatch without delay a steamer of the same dimensions as the Bruce, to be called the Wanaka. They have also ordered another steamer, similar to the Uawea and Taupo. It ia proposed to name her Rotorua. A banquet is to be given to Mr Thomson, member for Clutha, on Friday- Sir George Grey, Mr Fitzherbert, Mr Bolleaton, and all the Otago members who voted against abolition are invited as guests of the Clutha settlers. Mr Murray has kindly telegraphed that he will attend.
