THE MAKAREWA ROAD BOARD.

SlB, — As the members of the Makarewa Road Board will soon meet again to deliberate on the amended conditions of form of contracts submitted to them at the last meeting of tho Beard ; and as I know myself to be thoroughly conversant with all their deficiencies, want?, and requirements, I thought it advisable to endeavor to assist them in their meditative councils, bo far as present circumstances aeem to require. My present position— whatever that may be — entitles my opinion to be received and treated with the most profound consideration, respect, and attention at their hands ; the more so, as my late cheaply or dearly bought experience, as the case miiy be, places me in a position that enables me to offer them some very wholesome advice or suggestions, which, it acted upon, will materially lessen their strduom duties, and likewise preserve their minds from ever being gored by the horns of any future dilemma. Without any further prefatory remarks, I most humbly bog leave to submit the following suggestions : — First. Retain the services of an engineer who will be attentive to his duties, and who will at all Umeß reality respond to tho call of h. » ( superiors by immediately executing their I orders. Secondly. Let all works be surveyed and proper plans drawn previous to the contractors beginning work. Thirdly. Let a proper agreement be drawn up between the Board and the contracting par y, the chairman Bigning on behalf of the Board, the contractor signing jn such a manner us to hold him responsible for tho completion of tho work. Fourthly, and lastly, at tho time of signing 'the agreement let the contracting party be supplied with a correct plan of the work about to be executed. By following this yery simple mode of action the toadency
