Wellington, March 25 In consequence of illness in Judge Williams's family, the arrangements for the' next sitting of the Supreme Court have been altered. Judge Johnston remains in Wellington for the April Assizes, so as to relieve Judge Williams of the necessity of leaving home at present. Judge Williams will therefore take the Christchurch April Sessions. Judge Gillies takes Auckland, Taranaki, and Nelson ; the Chief Justice taking the Dunedin sittings, as before arranged. Wangantti, March 25. A great fire broke out in Victoria Avenue this morning, in premises whic h were occupied by Mr Anslow, draper ; the other part by Mr Bain, baker, the owner of the building. The fire origi- ! nated in a room occupied by Mr Anslow, who refused to admit the people, and when the door was broken, he was found j fully dressed. The fire spread over the building, and caught the adjoining one. The fire engine was useless, there being no water nearer than the river. The Telegraph Office was with difficulty saved. There was no wind, otherwise the best part of the town would have been destroyed. The inmates of Bain's house escaped half-dressed. The buildings destroyed and the insurances on them and stock, are: — John Anderson's furniture warehouse — National, £600 ; Norwich Union, £200. Peter Loftus, shoemaker, occupied a part of this building. Bain, baker— South British, £800; Standard, £400. Samuels, architect, Naional, £300; Barr, draper, £200; Hogg, butcher, Victoria, £200. Total insurance, £2700. The loss is estimated at £6000. A good deal of stock was saved. Anslow has been arrested, and will be brought up during the afternoon. It is supposed his stock is heavily insured in Nelson, and that he had sold most of it. Dv> t edin, March 25. The third day's races were not quite so well attended. The weather was splendid. The matter is not yet settled. It will not affect the result of the race. The Town Plate was uninteresting ; only two being left in, namely, Delamain's Templeton and Hercules. He declared to win with Templeton, and the horses just cantered round. For the Master Bowe Stakes, three started, Blafcche'a Esther being first. For the Forbury Handicap, Templeton was scratched.
