RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Wednesday, January 20. (Before J. Turnbull, Esq., R.M., and His Worship the Mayor.) J. J. Bennet was placed in the dock, and charged with assaulting James Clark, the bailifT of the Court, while in the execution of his lawful duty, namely, arresting the accused under justifying circumstances ; and also with contempt of Court. The accused stated that he must hare been under the influence of strong drink at the time, for he had no recollection of what he had done. He certainly had not misconducted himself wilfully or knowingly. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labor, for assaulting the bailiff, and to fourteen days imprisonment, with hard labor, for contempt of Court, the latter sentence to take effect at tho expiry of the former.
