EDUCATION BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the Education Board was held at Dunedin on the 12th January. Present— Hia Honor the Superintendent (in the chair), Measra D. Reid, J. L. Gillies, Dr Webster, and the Secretary, Mr Hislop. The following extracts from the reports of the Dunedin papers refer to matters of local interest: — ! FOIIEST HILL. The Board declined to sanction the election of a teacher (Auckland) recently appointed by the Orepuki School Committee. ~4. MA.TATTRA. The Mataura School Committee enquired whether the Board was in a I position to give them a more suitable school building than they now possessed. They were prepared to raise money for the purpose. The number of children fib for school was nearly doubled since Mr Hislop visited the Mataura. The Secretary — There is a very suitable site reserved at Mataura, and I was in hopes of getting a suitable building this year. \V"e may obtain it next year. 1 The Chairman — The present building is a large place. We had better inform them that we have no funds at present. j Keferred to the Executive. EDUCATION KESEItVES IN SOUTHLAND. Mr Baker, the Board's agent for the management of Southland reserves, recommended that consideration of Mr Boss's application for a lease of Bection 21, block IV., Campbelltown, be postponed, pending the reserve being Crown granted. That Mr Brown's application for sections 11, 22, and 23, block XIX., Invercargill, be approved. The recommendations were agreed to. SCHOOL PEES IN DISTRICT SCHOOLS. In a report submitted by Messrs Hislop and Petrie, they recommended that the following minimum rates of school fees be charged hereafter in the District Schools : — Pupil in the first standard, 6s per quarter ; second, 7s 6d ; third, 9s ; fourth, 10a 6d ; fifth and sixth, 12s. Mr Gillies — They cannot object to those fees. They certainly should not be lower. The report was approved. PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS. A statement was read of the results of the competition for the Provincial Scholarships, from which wo make the following extracts : — boys' grammar schools. (Total Marks obtainable, 1100.) A. Bruce Todd, 14 years 3 months, Oamaru, 821 marks, or 74 6 percentage. — Scholarship. G. T. Murray, 15 years 2 months, Oamaru, 749 marks, or 68 percentage. — Two years' free education. F. Nutter, 16 years, Invercargill, 722 marks, or 65*6 percentage. — Two years' free education. C. W. Tanuer, 14 years, Invercargill, 620 marks, or 56 3 perceutage. D. A. Taylor, 13 years, Invercargill, 429 marks, or 39 percentage. girls' grammar schools. (Total Marks obtainable, 975.) Anne T. Gillies, 14 years, Tokomairiro, 506 marks, or nearly 52 percentage. Martha Fleming, 15years, Invercargill, 311 marks, or nearly 35 percentage. J. Thomson, 13 years, Invercargill, 322 marks, or 33 percentage, Fanny Betliune, 15 year?, Invercargill, 280 marks, or 287 percentage. The Board adjourned till the Bth February.
