Southland Acclimatisation Society. — The Society received by the Alhimbra, last week, per favor of the Nelson Society, a case of starlings. It being the laying season, in which the birds cannot bear long confinement, one died on the passage, and lour shortly after arrival. The remainder, being strong and healthy, were set at liberty in the neighborhood of the North Road. It is the intention of the Society to import when the season for removal arises a large number of English and other birds. The pheasants introduced are multiplying last, and are frequently to be seen in the Wallacetowu district, and there is but little doubt that the quail is successfully acclimatised. Campbelltown.— Our correspondent writes : — The opening meeting of the Campbelltown Mutual Improvement Society took place on the evening of the 16th inst. The President, Mr James Waddel, occupied the chair, and opened the proceedings by reading an address to the members, showing forth in a most able manner the objects of the Society, the good to be derived therefrom by the members, and the manner of conducting it. Mr S. Q-. Instone gave notice that he intended proposing the following gentlemen as members of the Societyat the next meeting: —Messrs Tucker, Thomson, Tipping, Wood, and Henderson ; also, that he would, at next meeting, move for discussion-—" That a municipality would be conducive to the benefit of Campbelltown." Mr Sullivan gave notice that he would afterwards move for consideration — " That marriage with a deceased wife's sister is no good whatever to mankind." The meeting then terminated. Ths Volunteeb Bali. — At a meeting of the Ball Committee, held at the orderly room oi Wednesday night, a programme was submitted and approved of. From the number of tickets already disposed of, the ball promisas to be the most successful that has taken place for years. Municipal Council.— At the ordinary weekly meeting of the Municipal Council last night, His Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors, except Councillor Lurnsden, were present. It was resolved to call for tenders for gravelling the footpath leading from Tay street to the East Road. Accounts due in respect of contracts completed to the satisfaction of the Engineer, and amounting in all to £98 11s 6d, were passed for payment. It was resolved that advertisements should be inserted in the local and Dunedin papers inviting tenders for the erection of brick buildings for the Invercargill gasworks, providing the Q-as Engineer approved of adopting such a course. Councillor Hall proposed — That the Corporation advertisements, except in special cases, be inserted in one newspaper only, aud that the local papers receive the satne month about. The motion was seconded by Councillor Mitchell, and affirmed. Councillor Mitchrll's motion, of which he had given notice at a previous meeting— that the ordinary meeting be held every alternate Thursday, instead of weekly as heretofore — was seconded by Councillor Blackwood, and carried. Councillor Mitchell brought up his motion, of which he had given notice at a previous sitting — That the subdivision of the town into wards is desirable, and with that view a comnittee, consi ting of Councillors Roae, Blackwood, and the mover, be appointed to consiJer and report on the matter within a month. The motion was seconded by Councillor Rosa and carried. Councillor G-ood wiliie moved that a special meeting of tue Council should be held next Thursday nijjht for the purpose of considering means to raise a gas and public works loan. The Council then adjourned. '
