A Contradiction*. — The Guardian is informed that tlie statement m:ide by James Wheeler, in the Resident Magistrate's Court in Wellington — that he ha;l been an inmate of the Dunedin Lunatic Asylum, and that the Otago G-overn-ment had paid his passage to Wellington— is without foundation. No person of tlie name of Wheclor was ever on the books of the Dunedin Lunatic Asylum, nor did the Government ever pay the passage of such a person to Wellington. Mayor of Auckland. — Mr Isaacs has been elected Mayor of Auckland. Melancholy Accident. — An inquest was hold at Greytown on the 20th inst. on tho body of Captain Cleland. His horse shied on passing the mail coach, reared and threw him. Death was instantaneous. A verdict of " Accidental Death" was returned. A rider was appended exonerating the driver of the coaah from all blame. Captain Cleland commanded the Wairarapa Volunteers. He was an old and much-respected settler ; also an old Crimean soldier. Sale of Station Property. — The North Otago Times learns that, the Messrs Hodgkinson have sold tho Bold Hii! Station on tho Upper Waitaki, containing 70,000 acres of land, together with 18,000 sheep, 1000 head of cattle, horses, tc, to Duncau Sutherland, Esq., Omarama.
