CAMPBELLTOWN.
(Before Messrs T. Thomson and J. Waddel, J.P.s) Wednesday, July 22. James O'Brien, a seaman on board the Carrick Castle, was charge! with assiulting and attempting to rob a man named M'Farlane on tho previous evening. Tho two men had been drinking together during the whole of the d^y, and it was stated that M'Farlane had £138 in his possession. The decision of the Bench was stated to the prisoner as follows : — lt appears to the Bench that there is sufficient evidenco to bear out the charge against you. It seems quite clear that you did actually rob the prosecutor of his pockotbook, but finding that it contained no money, the further handling of him was to enable you to get the money, which you were no doubt aware he had in his possession. There doss not appear any cause for the assault, unless for the purpose of robbery. It likewise appears you committed a further offence, by personating a constable, but with wliich you are not charged. You are committed for trial at tho next sitting of the District Court.
