The e.s. Storm Bird left Port Chalmers at 2 p.m. on the 17th inst.. and arrived at the Bloff at 7 A.m. on the 18th ; experienced strong S.E. winds and heavy sea on the run down She only makes one more trip down south before going to her new owners. The Omeo left Hobson's Bay at 1.30 p.m. on the 11th September, and passed Swan Island at 7 p.m. on the 12th, arriving in Bluff Harbor at 7 a.m. on the 17th. Moderate S.W. winds were experienced until the night of the 15th, afterwards strong easterly winds. She brings 600 tons cargo, 81 horses, and 71 rams for all ports. The enquiry by the Steam Navigation Board, commenced on Thursday, into charges preferred by some of the passengers and seamen of the ship Dallam Tower, against Captain Davies, master of that vessel, was - concluded yesterday. These charges were to the following effect: — 1. That the captain, either through drunkenness or from havirg lost all presence of mind, was in an unfit state for duty on the 14th July, the day on which the foul weather in which the vessel was disabled, commenced. 2. That the hatches were not secured, and" that no preparation was made to prevent the water coming into tbe saloon through the doors, on the evening of that day ; 3. That the ship was brought to the wind on the 15th July without any proper preparation having been made for the manoeuvre; and 4. That the captain, after, the foremast had fallen and stove in the main hatch on tbe 18th July, and while the ship was taking in heavy seas, lay in bis bunk, and endeavored to dissuade the wen from obeying the orders of the chief officer while the latter was endeavoring to get the hatch properly covered. After hearing some of the witnesses called by the persons making the complaints, the hoard dismissed the first, second, and fourth charges without requiring the captain to produce rebutting evidence. The evidence given in connection with the third charge was very contradictory, but tbe board found that the ship was brought to the wind with the braces foul, and! that, consequently, the fore yards couid not be braced up, and they added that the captain ought to have ascertained that his gear was clear before so dangerous a step as rounding the ship in * gale of wind and a heavy sea was taken. Taking into consideration, however, the very exceptional circumstances attending the casualty, they contented themselves with cautioning Captain Davies to be more careful for the future when rounding his ship.— Argus, Sept. 6.
