RIVERTON.
(FROM OUR OWff CORRESPONDENT.) March 27. On Saturday last Mr Henry's boat, the " Mary," returned from the "West Coast, where she has been on a nine months' cruise engaged in sealing for Mr Hatch, of Invercargill. She brings 327 skins, and would probablv have done better had she not been short-handed, the two young men who some time ago walked from Martin's Bay to Queenstown being part of her crew. Those just returned report having seen unmistakable signs of the wild Maories at the head of ■ the Milford Haven Sound- They saw a fire in the Bush, and on making up to it, the birds had flown, doubtless having beard or seen them. The trackg of bare feet on the ground, they nay, were plainly visible. There is a talk of three sawmills being erected shortly in this locality, so we may yet see a good export trade done from this port, at least in the timber trade. The following cases were heard yesterday at the Resident Magistrate's Oourt, before H. M'Cullock, Esq., R.M:—Fullarton v. Nurse. Claim for a special rate by the Aparimaßoad Board, for £18 4s. The amount, with costs, wag paid into court. Fullarton v. Toung. A similar claim for £14 6s, which was withdrawn, having been previously satisfied out of court. Fullarton v. Stuck. This was a claim for 35a for a special rate. Mr Macdonald appeared for plaintiff. Mr Stuck contended that books should have been on view for ratepayers, and that a special purpose should be shown for which the special rate was levied. Mr Fullarton gave evidence to show that all the requirements of the Act had been complied with. Judgment for plaintiff, with costs, £1 12s Bd. Fullarton v. Craig. Another claim for rates. Judgment for plaintiff, with costs, £1 12s Bd. Stuck y. Mills arose out of a dispute
about th» cost of a dividing fence. The claim was £8 ss. Plaintiff was nonsuited, costs being divided. An unsuccessful attempt was made to launch the " Paxton" yesterday morning. Mr Thompson returning during the day, another trial, on the night tide, was made, when ehe slid off the slip into her " native element," and now lies broadside on to the beach, to enable some few repairs to be made about her bilge. A special meeting of the "Western Dis trict Building Society was held last night in the Courthouse, Mr Matthews, President, in the chair. There was a very good attendance. The Society was reconstituted on a permanent basis, the new rules being adopted. The next meeting will be held on 7th April.
