VARIOUS ANSWERS might be given to this question, according to the constitution and knowledge of the individual. Strong healthy persons, whether medically educated or not, generally regard nervousness as more or less an " imaginary complaint ;" it is sometimes only believed to be real when the patient is found to be dying or dead. The best answer to the question, probably, is this— NERVOUSNESS IS AN UNNATURAL CONDITION OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, Sometimes this unnatural state is accompanied with considerable bodily weakness, loss of flesh and loss of strength j but in most cases there is in the earlier stages of the disorder no outward sign of weakness. The sufferers are found in both sexes • they often have the bloom of health upon the cheek ; they are surrounded by kind friends, yet existence to them has no charms, for they feel that they cannot enjoy it. Without intending it, they annoy other people about the merest trifles ; if they encounter some person unexpectedly they feel confused, afraid, and alarmed ; the heart beats violently, the hand shakes when writing, and the whole frame at times experiences a complete tremulousness. The intellect also is sometimes clouded, the memory fails, the judgment becomes indistinct, the will capricious and undecided, the taste vitiated, the imagination broods upon unpleasant topics, the spirits are either very low or very excited, the ordinary duties of life become burdensome, society is shunned, and business neglected. A STRANGE SPECTACLE.-It is certuinly strange, but not the less true, that perfectly sane persons in the prime of life, with firm step and healthy countenance, may occasionally be met with, who, in spite of possessing all the advantages of education, religion, ample means, and kind friends, nevertheless are victims of the nervousness above described ; unhappy themselves, they render other people unhappy. Why is this ? What cause has operated to change the cheerful, active, obliging, unsuspecting, and uncomplaining youth into the unhappy, drowsy, listlesß, suspicious, and gloomy misanthrope ? Many causes, or one cause only, may operate to produce this sad state ? the cause may be either mental or physical, or both combined. ATTEMPTS TO CURB NERVOUSNESS by means of ordinary ronics have so frequently proved fruitless, that the leading physicians now for the most part recommend bygenic means, such as exercise in the open air, regular habits, sea bathing, the cold bath friction ; change of air and scene, as in travelling. If all these fail, as they often do, what is to be done ? THE ANSWER will be found by carefully perusing the FOLLOWING WORKNinth Edition, Post Free, Is 4d.
