RIVERTON.

RIFLE MATCH. Eiverton, Dec. 3. (FBOM OTIS OWN COBBESPONDENT.) To-day being the time appointed for the friendly match between the Piverton and Invercargill Volunteers, as the time drew near, much excitement was felt by the Rivertonians. The morning was anything but promising, accompanied by a strong south-west wind and rain; at one time it was dubious whether the Invereargillit6s would come, but come they did, putting us completely in the shade, both as regards uniform and firing. The Invercargill men were under the command of Capt. Instone and Lieut. Geisow, — who looked quite the soldier, but still, on the whole, I don't like the cut of the uniform, it smacks too much like the Militiaman. The Eiverton corps lost by fifteen points, there was only nine of a side^ instead of ten, on accdunt of one man being short from Invercargill. The Eivertbn crack shots were nowhere I guess> Clode and Robinson doing nothing. Smidt made the highest score on the ground, and was highly complimented. At the close of the match three cheers were given to the Invercargill men, and in response, Lieut. Geisow called for three cheers from his men on behalf of Mr Smidt, the highest scorer, which was heartily given by all present. The subjoiued is the score : —

In the evening a dinner was given at the Marine Hotel. About forty gentlemen were present. There was an excellent ' spread, and the evening passed off to the satisfaction of all. Captain Instone was chairman, and the vice-chair was occupied by Lieut. Giesow. The usual loyal toasts having been drunk with enthusiasism Capt. Instone proposed " the Invercar-, gill Volunteers," which was responded to by Lieut. Geisow, who then gave " the i Riverton Volunteers," which was ! responded to by Capt. Instone. Many other toasts, including those of " Captain Harvey," "Captain Instone," "Lieut. Giesow," and other officers of both companies followed. Several songs and recitations were given between the toasts in excellent style, and after a most enjoyable evening, the party broke up about 11 o'clock.
