The " Otago Daily Times," reports : — In the, business of the month just closed, improvement has been visible. Some slackness prevailed during the few days before and after the 80th ultimo ; and, owing to the state of the roads, up country trade has been curtailed ; but the aggregate of transactions has been good, and business closes with promise of activity during the next few weeks. Markets, generally, possess a very firm aspect. Quotations have varied a little generally in the direction of improvement, while there, is prospect of advance in the values of several leading staples. Imports continue on an extremely iroderate scale ; and stocks, which have for so.me months been gradually lessening, are now, in a number of articles, running low. their only arrival from the United Kingdom recently has been the ship Caribou, with a Clyde cargo ; from foreign pores, nothing has been due. In the exports of the month, the last of the season's wools are included, also some moderate ship-' ments of grain. The money market rules very easy, and first-class securities are sought by investors. Bank rates of discount have been modified to 7 per cent, for under 65 days' currency and 8 per cent, under 95 days, longer dates remaining as baforo. Exchanges close : — Selling rates on London, 3 days' sight, 2 p*r cent ; 80 days' sight, 1£ per cent ; HO days' sight, 1 per cent premium ; on Melbourne, % per cent, premium ; and on Sydney and the other Australian Colonies, 1 per cent, premium.
