METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS.

Mabtendaxe. — The weather continued cold showery, and unsettled. A heavy fall of rain occurred on the Bth (1*246 inches being registered in twenty-one hours), and slight thunderstorms on the Ist, 2nd N sth, 6th, 7th, and 12th. Hail fell on the 20ch. A smart shock of earthquake was felt at 6.5 p.m. on the 24th. Kb subterranean noise was audible at this station. The vibrations were perceptible for nearly a minute. Baeojteter (corrected and reduced). — Mas 30-252 (25th) ; mm., 29178 (8th) ; mean 29-811 ; range, 0-874 inches. Thebmometeb (in shade).— Max., B°*2 (26th and 27th) ; mm., 37*1 (20th) ; mean temperature of the air, 54 - 6 deg., which is no less than 6'B deg. below the nine years' average ; total range, 531; mean daily range, 19.1 deg. Hygeojieteb. — Dew point, 44*7 ; vapour tenison, "295 inches ; humidity, "69 inches. Radiation — Max. solar, 118*3 (26th) ; mm. terrestrial, 329 (18th). Raintaxi,. — Total, .5-308 inches, I*l4 inches above the nine years' average ; max. 1*246, (9th) ; rain fell on sixteen days. ' Cloud. — Mean amount, 60. Wind.— N.. 2; N.E., 0; E., 1; S.E., 9; S.. 1 ; S.W., 1 ; W., 11 ; N.W.. 5 days. Anemoketeb. — Mean daily movement, 139 inches ; max., 430, (23rd). February, 1868. Maetendaie. — Very fine during Ist and 2nd strong gale (E.S.E.), with thick, misty weather, on 3rd (the day of the great floods in Otago, &c.,) but no rain. On 4th, a thunderstorm of nearly four hours duration : much thunder and lightning and a little rain, but no hail, although at the Waikivi (district five miles S.) a violent hailstorm is reported to have occurred, sufficiently severe to break windows. Fine on sth ; gale ( W.) on 6th and 7th ; then very fine, and sometimes with rain, until 20th — a few slight showers on 15th and 16th alone excepted. Remainder of month cold, showery, and unsettled.
