COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
PTJNEDIN COMMERCIAL. (From the J9ally Times, Oct. 13.) The transactions this ' week have been of a limited. character, without any alteration in prices. In mining operations we are enabled to report favorably of d fferont goldfields. As the spring advances fresh openings are developed, whilst the Lake district commands marked attention. The liirer Nevis between the Dunstan and Like, has attracted miners from the Mitnuhcrikia, who are reported to be doing remarkably well. It is very desireablf, with the resources now at command, that i'Timodiat.e action should be taken to secure proper communication with the Like, and it h.ts been suggested that it should bo opened up via the Dunstan, Kawarau, the Nevis (the new district referred to), Gentle Annie's Creek and Pox's. Tlw distance wonld be about 130 miles; 78 miles less than the present circuitous route. It is to be feared any delay in promoting the undertaking referred to, will seriously operate against the interests of this province. T.ie mercantile community look with a jealous eye on the measures in contemplation to secure to them a fair proportion of the Lake trade; and they consider the subject of paramount importance. The sum of Llo',ooo, it is said, would complete the road from the Kawarau Gorge to the Lake. It is likewise desirable that every facility should be offered to promote the Postal arrangements wiih that district, and the passenger tmflic^ as it- is obvious, we are in danger of being ouiilankevl. The Harburg has brought an unexpected addition of Culiforniau flour to this market, find it is yet to bo seen what olher shipments will t'nltaw. The oats and wheat, if of good quality, will meet with j ready sale at remunerative prices. j Coals have arrived in great excess of wants, and the stocks are exceedingly heavy.
