INVERCARGILL HORSE, CATTLE, AND SHEEP MARKET.
Messes Caret asd Gillks' .Report -for the fortnight ending 3rd October. The opening of spring has bad quite n refreshing influence upon" i.he stock market generally, cau jug a demand tor heavy draught horses, working bullocks, and imported store cuttle, at improved rates, justifying the views we have previously expressed of the likelihood of an extensive bu-iness during the summer in all descriptions of good stock, at remunerative prices. There has hardly been time as yet to receive any addition of cattiw from Austrn'iian ports, but arrivals are anxiously looked ibr, and early consignments will meet with ready sale. The improvement noticeable in our last report upon the horse market, is fully borne out by our recent sales of ship horses— and for working bullocks there is a steady enquiry, leaving a good profit to shippers. Houses— Our yards have been supplied mostly with provincial horses, and in consequence of the scarcity of imported draught stock, buyers have had to pay extreme prices. Our sales have ranged from £59 up to £76, at which we have cleared nil fair lots offered. The only arrival sint-e the Fawn, has been the India, from Lauucc3 ■ ton, which vessel; as usual, his landed her stock in splendid order, aftPr a very rough passage down. They are as fine a lot as ever cnine into Southland, re/lecfing the same credit upon Mr Symmons that he has always enjoyed in his importations to New Zealand. The fbliowinc are the prices obtained for this shipment— f ss, -£b"0, £01, £73, £75, £S2 10s, £83, £87, £S»5, £100, and £110. Our market rates are — l-'irst-class heavy draught horses. ..Lbo to 1.0;> S'-cond do do ... <>5 to 75 Third do do ... o5 to 50 Hncksfrom *> to nO Wohkino Bullocks— We have sold, ex (Jo*mopolite, L52 to LSS per pair; ex India, from Launceston, at L(>s per pair ; nnd Provincial at LOO per pair. The market rates are for large framed bullocks, three to five years old, LI 1 to Ll(>; mixed lots, LI 3 to J..14. Milch Cows. — Wo sold at Wallaeetown on Wednesday, the 17th ultimo, 20 cows from _ the herds of Mr Kobert G reive, which realised from £\7 up to £'25 10s; and we have made sales privately from our yards at from £18 to £26". Our market quotations are— First-class, £20 to £25 , Second do, 12 to 10 Fvr Cattle.— The market has been well supplied during the past fortnight, prices obtained being from 60s to 75s per 100 lbs. We disposed of a mob of 80 head, principally cows from the station ol' Messrs Clapcott, Brothers, at an average of £17 to £17 5s per head ; and 22 head of superior bullocks from the station ot Mesn-s Hawkinson Bros., at an average of £2<J per head, a lew realising as hi"-h as £30. The nanrkct is now becoming bare of"good beef. We have again to direct the attention of intending shippers to tho importance of not overloading Hie market with fat stock, as it is limited at present. Fat S incur. — Wo have sold uw fat sheep, taken froni the station, tit 40s per head, and quote 38a to 45s as the market value, with a moderate supply. Store Shkbp. — We arc daily expecting the arrival of our first shipment of the season, which are much inquired for, at 25s to 27s for 4 and 6 tooth wethers, and 2(!s to 2Ss for li and 4 tooth ewes, ck-livery 24 hours after landing.
