SIR j Allow me through the medium of your columns to convey my thanks to those of my fellow-townsmen by whose votes I have had the honor to have been returned as a memb«r of the Invercargill Town Board. Not having consented to my nomination, nor solicited a single vote to secure my election, I cannot but feel flattered by the confidence thus voluntarily reposed in me. I fear that my business will prevent the devotion of that amount of time and attention to municipal affairs which the duties of the office will necessarily require, and would have preferred that the office had devolved upon some person better qualified, and with more leisure at com- - mand. JBut lest my friends should consider that 1 lightly esteem the honor they have thought fit to confer on me, I shall not shrink from the performance of the duties thereUy imposed, so long as they are discharged to the satisfaction of my supporters and myself. It is my intention, so soon as the new electoral toll shall have come into operation, to resign my seat at the Board, that an opportunity may be afforded whereby the important interests of the enlarged numbejr of electors may then be more fully and fairly represented than they are al present. I am, dear Sir, Yours faithfully, H. A. GIILEH Dated lavercargill, Septembor 1, 15G3.
