The Mayor's Nest. — There is a good anecdote told of Itobbin Johnson, who, in the year 1769, was Provost of Dundee. His services being required on a certain occasion, a messenger was despatched to his house, who, upon asking for tbe Provost, was told by the guidwife that he was " awa' to the whin hill for a pockfu' o' whins." Off scampered the callant to the " whin hill," and soon the Provo3t appeared, and throwing down his faggots, pulled off his bonnet, and wiping the sweat from his bald pate, said, "Janet, where's my wig ? I'm to sit in judgment to-day." "Your wig!" quoth Janet ; " did I ever see sic a man ? How can you get your wig ? D'ye no ken the hen's laying in' t V Lighthouses — The Marine Board, which has lalely been sitting- at Auckland, have agreed to send to England immediately tor three lighthouses for tbe coast of New Zealand. One of these is 10 he erected in Cook's Strait, but the site hat not been decided upon. The second is for Tiii-tiri-Matangi, at the entrance of Auckland harbour ; and the third is for Port Lyielton heads. The latter wiU be wdd for^jy the Canterbury Government. — flPwa
