THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION AND OTAGO JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

(Fromthe ADaily Times, March 5.) ' j ! Although at nn early hour yesterday morning the sky was rather overcast, the weather during the races was all that could be desired, lt was not till the return that the rain began to fall, and those of our readers who live in Dunedin need not be told thnt it continued to r.-iin the whole evening. At about t) o'clock the start for ths races commenced, and from that hour until nearly one o'clock the road was lined with passengers on foot, on horseback, and in vehicles. We use for the last a comprehensive designation as they included every possible variety of cart, wagon, coach and carriage. Noticeable amongst the many was one of Messrs Cole, Hoyl & Co.'s coaches with a splendid team of six horses. Narrow and hilly as is the reoad, there were only a few (rilling, and as far as we loarnt. no serious accidents on the way out or homr. Tho number of people on tho courso was vorv large, but -scarcely so much so as we expected, seeing that the day was very generally observed as a holiday in Duuedin. The Stewards observed the times fixed for the races -with commendable and u-nusal punctual i'y. Many persons who thought the contrary would he the case, found themselves too late for the first race. The Maiden Plate fell to the share of favorite-. Black Doctor, on whom as much as two to one was bet before starting. When it came to tho distance fhe cry arose that Melton was winn; *ig, and fora moment it looked very much like it. Lut the Doctor m-.npged to shake" off the only opponent that st k' him and won- iiy. -.ext c.me 'a great race in the if sue of which so many bepe and anxieties were centered. Mormon, instead of abating, seemed to increase in favor, and slight odds were freely offer ' on him. Shilela *h had ma *iy admirers, and the other f reo horses were not without friends. The start was a very tolerable one, Mormon and Revoke havir-r slightly the advantage in it. The race is told in a dozen words-. Mormon led from the s* 1 rt, to the distance the last turn round, wh u L~dy Bird closed up and won after a stout st. tggle in the straight running; So much did Mormon look like winning during the race that two to one was freely offered on him, and five to -e was laid against Lady Bird during the pro ess ofthe horses. Ultima could have secuied third place, but his jockey pulled up just before reaching tho Judge's stand, and Revoke secured third honors — not, barren honors, by-the-bye, as a considerable amount of money depended on tlio places. The time, 5 min. '55 _ oc. is, wc believe, quicker than than thnt nf any other champion races. The victory of a New Zea'and hor o. -and especially the fact of its be longing fn so popular a sportsman as Mr Bed wood, elicited loud cheers from the people preseut, wbich must have been exceedingly gratifying* to the lucky proDri.-tor of the mare. The rider of Mormon entered a protest against, the winner on the grounds of a cross, but the stewards unanimously disallowed it. Fo'lowin x the Champion Race camo the Handicap, which resulted in an easy victory for the favorite, Golden Cloud. The Hurdle Race was a giU ' > Falcon; Kangaroo came to grief at the first fence without hurting his rider, but at the second or third le *.p D miel Webster wr«s 1 rs fortunate; the horse fell, and " e rider, Simpson, was, we believe, much, but not seriously, hurt. A Hurry Scurry concluded the day's races, when the large concourse of people made a start homewards, apparently delighted with their day's enjoyment. Indeed, they had every reason to be so, as every thing went off smoothly. The Stewards, the Secretary, nnd (he Clerk of the course and his deputy, arc entitled to much credit for the excellence of the arrangements. FIRST DAY. Wednesday, Ith Maece. MAIDEN PLATE. After a little delay at the starting post, caused by the fractioffsuesa of tbe contending horses, Mormon gob away with the lead, closely followed by Shillelagh, Ultima, Revoke, and Lady Bird. After half a mile Lady Bird took third place, and they travelled in that order the first time past the stand; Lady Bird then put in her appearance as second, Ultima coming on nest, Revoke following, and Shillelagh last. There was no alteration until the straight running, when Lady made hor effort, passed Mormon, notwithstanding a game effort on his part, and won oasily by two lengths, after a slashing race.
