I find the following account of the wages given by a Lancashire baronet a man of considerable standing and importance in his day, about, the year 1770 : — " Butler, £10 ; coachman, £1 1 ; footman, £6; brewer, carter, &c, £8 10s.; gardener, £12: housekeeper, £12; cook. £5; housemaid, £4 108.; fcitchentnaid, £3 10s." The party giving the information adds ; " Sir Roger gives most of his clothes to the butler, and a small share to the footman." — yoics and Queries. An Incipient Volcako, a Roman journal, states, has made its appearance near the Civita Veecbia railway, about two -leagues from Rome. A committee of engineers and geologists has been sent 1o examine the eruptions of smoke and sulphurous exhalations which have been observed. In their report., they state that the scat of the fire is on the right-hand side of the railway, at a place called Monte delle Pichc. For the space of 2UO square metres the ground is so hot that no one can ftand on it long without fee-ling inconvenienced. There are numerous large fissures, through which iota of hot bitumenous vapour issue. The soil around is covered with light chrystals of sulphur, and digging to the depth of five feet, the rock is found To be .incandescent. The rock is a clayey EcUist, full of lignite and vegetable fossils transformed into bitumen. It is supposed to have been set on fire by sparks from a locomotive. It is _ not attended with the least danger, but the neighboring population i3 nevertheless much alarmed.
